Glasgow Ski and Snowboard Centre offers varied opportunities for ski racers, both experienced and aspiring. The club holds a number of open races and snowboard and freeride events, as well as its own dry-slope and snow championships each year.
Once children have reached the required technical standard and are recommended by a current instructor they may apply for a trial for the Club‘s Race Training programme. The programme is split into two blocks: a 12-week pre-season training block between September and Christmas, and a 10-week in-season block between January and Easter. Snow training is also available in the Scottish resorts, weather permitting. This training is only available to Club Members.
Race training is available to adults who want to go beyond the advance level lessons available at the Club. Sessions are held on Thursday nights in 5-week blocks from 9.30 until 11 pm, running from September to March. An adult version of snowboard performance training is also advertised at the Club when available.
The programme kicks off in September with a FreeRide competition, ‘big @ bella’. This is closely followed on the first Sunday in October by the Bella Bairns Race for the youngest group of racers. Next is the largest open ski race of the season, The South of Clyde Championships, in early October. November brings the Blues League, a two-night event with teams of six skiers, and the Swix Medal Challenge. December brings the Club‘s own Artificial Slope Championships. After Christmas the race scene switches to snow (details available from the BritSki website). Our own Snow Championships are usually held in March at Nevis Range. In April comes Spring-Board, a freeride competition, and in August the Club stages its Summer Medal competition. In addition to the open events, the Club holds three race nights which only Club members can take part in.
The excellent late season conditions in the highlands meant that the we were able to hold the Club Snow Championships this year. The date was Sunday 23rd March, 2008, the venue was Nevis Range, and a great time was had by all.
